Collegiata Church

The Parish Church of San Gregorio Magno was the seat of a Capitolo, that a number of priests in analogy with the Cathedral of Città di Castello, bishopric. In fact, in 1317, Bishop Ugolino, got to see awarded the title of Arcipetura with the Canons and Bishop's chair to the Collegiate Church of Montone. The final settlement came with the restoration of the Canon Pazzaglia in 1661 that transformed the original fourteenth century structure in baroque style. The church has a Latin cross, ends with an apse circular on the walls above the choir there are depicted the 12 Apostles painted by the Florentine Parenti. At the center of a flight of clouds with the descent of the Holy Spirit, above a painting of San Gregorio Magno (patron saint of the city) the act of writing the Dialogues, under the gaze of the Virgin Enthroned with the Child in her lap. Overlooks the magnificent nave a coffered ceiling in gilded wood (clear is the call to the Cathedral of Città di Castello) with a central painting of the Virgin between the cornice and ceiling are painted four episodes relating to the life of the Virgin. The two chapels, one to the left of SS. Sacrament by which attend religious services the Poor Clares of the Monastery of S. Agnes, custodians of the precious reliquary containing the S. Spina, donated to the people of Montone by Count Carlo Fortebracci in 1478, the other of the SS. Rosario. Above the door through which you enter the sacristy "The Last Supper" of Dionysius Calvaert of 1611.
