Montone

Coloti Village

The medieval village (Borgo) of Coloti di Montone is located in the Upper Tiber Valley of Umbria, in the forest of Pietralunga and the Valley of Carpina; originally built as a military post, over time it integrated residential buildings and farmhouses, the Church of St. Lawrence, documented from the 1300’s, and an oven for the district residents.
Abandoned in the late 60’s, it then became State property. Given its ideal location, in 1995 it was chosen as the site for the construction of an Astronomical Observatory, due to the scarcity of lights in the valley; it was thus restored and brought to new life in 2000.
While the management of the Observatory was entrusted to the University of Perugia, private subjects were involved in the administration of the old buildings and structures.
Since 2001, it has been promoted as a center for touristic events, scientific and conservation projects aimed at promoting the local heritage, environment and culture.
It is currently managed by the cooperative Continenti, part of the “Passepartout-abn” Group, specialized in promoting sustainable tourism in Umbria, and part of the national and international agency “Le Mat – Local development and sustainable tourism agency”.
The facilities include 12 apartments, of which 8 are destined to visitors, fully furnished and equipped.
In addition to this, the following are available: The common room “Sirio” equipped with kitchen and a veranda for meals and social events; the small Church of St. Lawrence for meetings, educational purposes, games, internet, screenings; a swimming pool overlooking the valley, open in July and August.
The above facilities and the presence of Anna and Franco all year long make it the ideal place for family holidays as well as meetings, games and other activities without losing an intimate dimension for relaxation.
The place is also fit to accommodate small groups, with private facilities for seminars, meetings and conferences; it is suitable for all those who need a tranquil and peaceful place for creative activities, meditation and freedom of expression; extra services like catering, transportation, assistance and astronomy lessons are also available.
This place is an ideal base to explore the beautiful surroundings as it is located in the midst of the network of nature trails crossing the woods, connecting it to several places of natural and historical interest. There are itineraries suitable for all hikers and they can be enjoyed on foot, by bike or during guided tours.
Its location on the border of Tuscany and Marche allows reaching several historical towns with short trips: Montone, Città di Castello, Arezzo, Anghiari, Sansepolcro and many others. In less than an hour by car you can reach other wonderful locations in Umbria: Perugia, Assisi, Gubbio, Spello, Todi, Trasimeno Lake.
