
Parish Church of Saint Gregorio
The parish church of San Gregorio, the oldest church in Montone. Of Romanesque-Byzantine style, with gabled facade, was built around 1000 and partially modified by the Vitelli family during their rule over the town. The interior has three naves divided by large arches resting on columns coupled brick. The nave ends with a semicircular apse that originally contained the sculptural group depicting the Deposition of Christ today in the museum of St. Francis. At the end of the aisles are two canopies of stone, richly decorated, dating back to the sixteenth century. Along the walls are visible remains of frescoes depicting the Annunciation and the Madonna Enthroned. The roof is made of wood trusses. The church, no longer officiated, we have news documentary since the year 1100 and since 1207 the church had its own home to house travelers and pilgrims.
